Hoping and Waiting: Five Minute Friday

Oh how I hate the waiting, especially when the end result is by no means guaranteed. Distraction has so often been my friend. Find something to keep busy, something else to think about as you wait for the news. I’m doing a psychological experiment on myself. Is waiting and hoping really better than just waiting? Is there ever any harm in hoping for the best? I want to believe that hope is always better. Because when the bad times comes, I don’t think anticipating them will make the pain any easier. But the voices of the past always come, threatening disappointment and fear. So hope has to rise above all of that.

Waiting doesn’t have to be passive. Our actions may have no impact on the final results, but as long as they acknowledge that, doing something can serve a purpose. Either by distraction or giving us a focus for our hope and an outlet for our anxiety. Usually for me it means losing myself in a book or keeping my hands busy with knitting. (For the record my toddler yelling at me does not make the waiting easier).

But what does help, is surrounding yourself with others who love and support you. Waiting is always easier with company and hope is contagious.

Kelly Dean Project: Week 3

It can be hard to feel motivated for a whole month, so this week will be a little bit easier. I don’t list the Foundation Five but obviously if you have the time to fit it in, they continue to be recommended.

This week is only one routine a day organized in my preferred combination. Why you say? I like to alternate cardio and stretching.

Day 1 

Kelly Dean Total Body Toning

This continues to be one of my favorite workouts, even on Fit2B. I could do this at least once a week, if not more. It’s all built in, stretching, cardio, arm work and core. When I know I should do something and I can’t decide what, this is the one I choose.

Day 2

Kelly Dean Total Body Stretching

If I could do the previous workout and this one every day, I’d be in fantastic shape. (That would probably be another interesting experiment).

Day 3

Kelly Dean Cardio

I enjoy this workout as a great way to switch up my usual short cardio choices, Basic Aerobics II or Basic Aerobics III. I wish it was on Roku, I probably would use it more often. But as it is, I do continue to work it in wherever I can.

Day 4

Pregnancy Stretching with Kelly

This is a great stretch, I don’t care if you are pregnant or not. So please don’t let that stop you.

Day 5

Kelly Dean Wall Workout

This is a short workout that has serious punch. If you have less than 10 minutes but know you should workout, this the one you need. You will get a good workout but not get too sweaty so you can fit it in anywhere.

Day 6

Bonus: Kelly’s Floor Core

I’ll admit this is not my favorite workout because it’s hard. It doesn’t seem like it would be, but core work on your back requires constant vigilance.

This experiment is going on a bit longer than I anticipated, but I still want to try to finish out the whole month. If you are getting bored or need more of a challenge, please feel free to add other workouts. The point is to see whether a month of Kelly Dean helps to reinforce proper patterns of breathing and core control. Only one week left!

Surround Yourself by Great Thoughts from Great Minds

In the age of the internet, it’s hard to tell the good writing from the twaddle. Truth is ill defined and thus everywhere and yet nowhere. But surrounding yourself with the thoughts of great minds, especially people faith, is hugely beneficial.

This doesn’t always mean reading the classics, though that doesn’t hurt. Sometimes my brain can only handle classic literature in small increments. That’s one reason why I really enjoyed this book in college.

It was a text book in my Foundations of Christian Spirituality Class. I’m ashamed to say I didn’t finish the whole book. But every few years I try it again. It takes experts from great writers and thinkers of the faith and breaks them into digestible chunks. This will probably be the next book I tackle during my nighttime reading.

For a long time I felt guilty that at night I wanted to read something for pleasure rather than do an in depth Bible study. Yet, I found that reading before bed was crucial to helping my brain unwind. So I compromised. I am slowly working my way through books that I think will help me strengthen my faith, in addition to scripture. I’m currently almost done with Victory Over the Darkness: Realize the Power of Your Identity in Christ by Neil T. Anderson. I don’t read a whole chapter, sometimes just a few pages. Then I give myself some time to read a book for pleasure. I just finished Mobbed by Carol Higgins Clark. It’s easy, light fluffy mystery reading where there is usually a happy or at least satisfactory ending. Next I’m starting Stealing the Preacher which was a Christmas gift from my husband. I had an opportunity to review the first book in Witemyer’s series and I’m pleased to be able to follow the continuing saga, even though it isn’t my usual fare.

By having both a spiritual non-fiction and a fiction book going at the same time I’m able to nourish my soul and entertain my mind; all while helping my body relax enough to get a good night sleep. So please, make the time to read in your life. Even just a few pages here and there. When you feel overwhelmed by life or overloaded by opinions in the internet age, return to the wisdom of the past and find rest there.

Share Brave: Five Minute Friday

I’ve been absent from FMF for over a month, not entirely intentionally. I always plan to write. I have my blog open, and the theme floating through my head, but somehow the words don’t seem to make it to the page. Maybe it’s because I haven’t seemed to even have the words at times. I feel as though I have nothing to share.

At a time in my life when I feel both incredibly full yet empty; excited but exhausted. I find myself wanting to say everything or nothing. Sometimes it’s just too hard to parse words and decide what is worth saying and what should be kept to myself.  To share the truth about parenting, even when it doesn’t look pretty. To share my joy without causing aches of longing in others. I know what it is like to wait, and hope. I’m still hoping.

But I also know that more than anything I want to keep sharing my true self. The part that admits where I’m lost but isn’t embarrassed when I’m strong. That somehow, in my weakness, I can inspire others. This, to me, feels central in how we love each other as women. To really connect with each other, bearing each other burdens. Rejoicing with those who rejoice and weeping with those who weep.

But we can’t do it if we aren’t willing to be vulnerable, sometimes exposed. To be Brave.

The Kelly Dean Project: Week 2

If you are just joining me, last week I asked the question: What would happen if you only did Kelly Dean workouts for one month plus the Foundational Five?

I’m definitely starting to feel more awareness in my abdominals. There is something about Kelly’s cuing that forces me to make sure I’m really engaging all of my abdominals. Plus a good review of the Foundational 5 is always welcome. This week will be using the same basic routines as last week but in new pairings.

Just to clarify something from last week. This is no way replaces abdominal rehab. There are three amazing online abdominal rehab programs available at The Tummy Team.
